Africa!

Obviously, not the place but the song (the state of being?). As many people who know me know, if you're going to listen to '80s music, "Africa" by Toto has to be near the top of the list of songs you want to hear.

Last night, a friend and I were out and went to a band called Ad. Makers which features a house cover band called The Big Boy Band. Cover bands are huge in Thailand, in tons of bars and restaurants all over the city (and probably the country). I've been told that the Big Boy Band is the pre-eminent cover band in Bangkok, although I don't really know whose ranking that is. So, last time we were at Ad. Makers, I requested they play "Africa" and some Supertramp. Admittedly, they stumbled through "Africa" that first time as I assume it's not the most-requested '80s tune amongst their typical clientele (although their Supertramp was surprisingly quite good). However, this time when I walked in, first song they played was "Africa," smiling at me as they did it. This time, the Big Boy Band played it flawlessly so kudos to them.

We got pretty excited as well when they followed it up with what we thought was some Air Supply, but it turned out to be Chicago. Kind of a buzzkill.

PS--The "Grey Gardens" playing on the TV in the background seems pretty weird, eh?

  1. When I lived in Banglampoo, there was a restaurant down the street from my house that had a guitarist come in on Tuesday nights and cover Eric Clapton songs all evening. I learned all the words to "If I Saw You in Heaven" because of that guy.

  2. Lots of Eric Clapton, and of course... The Eagles! Jakarta too has a love for rock cover bands. I especially love what they do with the lyrics..
